I don't THINK so! {5 Sore Throat Home Remedies}

.
Hate it.

Quite literally . . .

I HATE being sick!

Well, this morning, I woke up with ye old sore throat. Boo. Hiss.

While my family probably appreciated my "quiet" morning {just kiddin}, I was really bothered!

See, while I really do hate being sick, I hate being sick away from home even more. We're headed to the beach tomorrow, and the thought of being sick there was just so sad. When I'm sick, I want my own bed, own house, own comforts. But there was not way that I was missing out on the sun, sand and surf!

So, I quickly googled how to cure/ease a sore throat Home Remedy style and I found the following great options!

1. Drink hot liquids - This is great, and lucky for me
that I LOVE hot tea. Peppermint and Earl Grey in
particular! If you like Green Tea, then this is a great
option, too {because of all the antioxidants}.

2. Gargle - I know it can be a little unpleasant, but
it really helps! Add a little salt {1/2 tsp} in a cup
of hot water and then gargle for as long as you can
stand it and repeat! Believe me the results feel
really great, and it cuts down on the inflammation.

3. Use Citrus - Sip lemon juice. Mix 1
tablespoon each of honey and lemon
juice in one cup of warm water and
sip away. It helps so much!

4. Steam it up! -  Create a steam tent using a
bowl of steaming water and a towel held
over the back of the head. This opens up
the nasal passages and science has shown
that it can shorten the duration of infection.

5. Suck on Garlic? - Yep, that's right. This is an
old Amish remedy. Take a peeled garlic clove,
slice it in half, and place one half in both sides of
your mouth. Sucking on garlic like a cough drop
releases allicin, a chemical that can kill the
bacteria that causes strep. {Note: I tried this
today for the first time, and it really works!}

Needless to say, I didn't create the ideas for this line-up. These are borrowed from here

So the next time that sore throat starts getting me down, hopefully I won't have to use a prescription. I can just go to the kitchen to whip up a home remedy that'll knock it out in no time!

I'd love to hear some of your ideas for home remedies. What've you found to be the most helpful?

  1. All of the above, Sister! You are on the right track. When I was little and in the throws of a cold, my Dad would mix up what I called his 'potion' for me at night. Worked like a charm and eased me right into a pleasant sleep.

Later in life, I found out that his 'potion' was lemon juice, crushed peppermint and a (little) Jack Daniels. :) Talk about an old home remedy!

So I suppose you could add Jack Daniels to cure what ails you!

  3. Well, I hope you're enjoying your beach vacation (Lord knows I need one!) sans throat problems! I'd make sure to do the gargling AFTER the garlic-sucking, for sure! I have always heard to drink hot tea with honey in it (it helps that my fiancé is a beekeeper--all the honey we need!), and it works wonders.
